Hands

Serving Charlottesville is to be a service group at CFA to connect CFA members and attendees with opportunities to serve the Charlottesville area’s needs. Two specific opportunities are listed below, but the main focus of the group is to connect people with friends and opportunities to serve so they can show their faith through their deeds (to paraphrase James 2:14-19). In addition to existing opportunities, hopefully the group will incubate new avenues for CFA members and attendees to serve those in need.

Serving Charlottesville operates primarily electronically.  We have a large email list that group members just hit "Reply All" when an idea strikes them.  You just never know who else may be interested in what you are thinking or considering.

If you have been feeling the nudge from God to serve, but need some help, encouragement and/or ideas, SERVING CHARLOTTESVILLE is for you. Please contact Tommy Everett at teverett@hamptonandeverett.com for more information.

The Haven at First & Market

The Haven, located at 112 West Market Street in Charlottesville, seeks to help the needy and homeless of the Charlottesville area help themselves.

The Haven provides day shelter for the needy and homeless communities in the Charlottesvillearea. Along with providing breakfasts (and weekend lunches), the Haven has laundry and shower facilities, mail and storage facilities, telephone and computer access, an area just to rest and recover and on-sight service providers such as PACEM, Region Ten, Legal Aid Justice Center, Monticello Area Community Action Agency, Charlottesville Dept. of Social Services, Offender Aid & Restoration, On Our Own to assist the guests. There are also job and housing counseling services available.

Between October and April, the Haven is open every day from 7:00 to 5:00. Between April and October, the Haven is open from 7:30 to 4:30 weekdays, 7:30 to noon on Saturday and 10:00 to 3:00 on Sundays.

CFA has been an integral part of the volunteer workforce at the Haven. Typical shifts are two hours long. For information on volunteering, please contact Tommy Everett at TEverett@hamptonandeverett.com.

More detailed information on the Haven can be found on their website at www.thehaven.org.

PACEM

PACEM works in tandem with the Haven to provide Charlottesville’s homeless community with a warm evening meal and a place to sleep during the colder winter months. On a weekly basis, local churches open their space to provide night shelter.

In the past, CFA has partnered with First United Methodist Church and Portico Church in hosting the PACEM men. In the spring of 2010, CFA was an overflow site for the PACEM men hosting approximately 15 men per night in the basement area. In the fall of 2010, CFA hosted the opening week for the PACEM men in the sanctuary area and the PACEM women were hosted in the winter of 2011.

CFA plans to continue to be a host site for both the PACEM men and women for the 2011-12 PACEM season. The men were housed at CFA from October 29 - November 4 and the women will be housed in the Spring. If you are interested in serving in CFA’s outreach to PACEM, please contact Andy Gregory at virginiagregs@gmail.com.

More detailed information on the Haven can be found on their website at www.pacemshelter.org.
